At each meeting we discuss a book which we have been reading during the previous month. Books are provided by our very helpful library service. We read mostly modern fiction, with the odd classic and non-fiction thrown in. The books are delivered to Central Library where they can be signed out by members. The group meets in the cafe of the World of Glass.

“Blast from the Past” by Cathy Hopkins

When Bea goes to India with two of her best friends, to celebrate her 50^th birthday, she is given a session with a medium. Bea, having reached a significant birthday, is single and the medium suggests that to find true love she must look into her past. This starts Bea’s search through her little black book of previous boyfriends, which proves to be not such a good idea. At the same time, the medium sets her on the path to find two people who met and died in wartime. There is a suggestion of reincarnation: could Bea have lived a previous life as the woman of this couple? The two stories of past and present run as themes through the novel.

The group found this a light read, perfect for our choice over the summer. The central theme of the book, a woman of fifty looking back and wondering why everlasting love had passed her by, was interesting and probably would have stood on its own, without the supernatural bits. As each boyfriend made an appearance the reader could understand why they were quickly ticked off the list. However it did make for some amusing encounters. Altogether a lighthearted read.
